About the Work
Synopsis
Monger tells the story of a group of servants held captive in the basement of an abusive mistress. The work unfolds as a visceral, highly theatrical piece, where emotionally charged movement intersects with contemporary ethnic vocabularies.
The score weaves together influences from Romani, Balkan, classical, and rock music, creating a layered sonic landscape that drives the work's tension and intensity.
At its core, Monger examines systems of hierarchy and control, the nature of power, and the fragile boundaries of free will—alongside the moral and emotional compromises made in the struggle to survive.
The work premiered in October 2008, opening the International Dance Festival in Tel Aviv, and was revived in 2025 as Barak Marshall's first creation in his role as Artistic Director and resident choreographer of the Inbal Dance Theatre.
